GENT (Gerald Grant)

Born in England in 1966, Gent (Gerald Grant) emigrated to Trinidad at the age of six, then to Montreal at the age of sixteen. With little formal training, Gent began painting regularly at the age of thirty-three, having studied agriculture and then management. Gent works mainly with acrylic paints on canvas and paper. His early paintings are mainly portraits. The portrait remains an important part of his work, but the latter has however evolved to include nudes and abstract subjects. Photography remains an important tool and a source of inspiration.

Topics like childhood, vulnerability, nudity, the individual in front of society, walls, barriers, distance and separation, spirituality and all the beauty hidden under the ugliness of life are often present in her works. Often a solitary individual is present, seemingly caught up in a moment of introspection, before a crowd or alone.
